By the late 1960's, Charlton was pretty much the only publisher still putting out comic books devoted to auto racing adventures (with
certain exceptions like DC's Hot Wheels). The company decided to combine the genre of auto/motorcycle racing with the popular fad
of surfing, and created Surf N' Wheels, which could potentially appeal to a wider range of kids and young people who
didn't otherwise read comics.
