In the early-to-mid 1970's, Marvel Comics was trying to grab a toehold in the larger, potentially more lucrative magazine market. Since they weren't bound by the Comics Code in that format, they could present characters and stories that were a little edgier and darker than in their regular outlets. They found limited success with magazines, but some of their best titles featured their monster characters, such as Dracula Lives and Monsters Unleashed.
Tales of the Zombie was another such effort and for it Marvel brought back a long-forgotten monster character from a 1953 storie, the Zombie, who would take his place among the other Marvel horror characters such as Dracula and Werewolf By Night. In addition to the regular comics stories, there were also a few illustrated articles on related topics, and even a few pages here and there of fumetti photo-comics.
